About the project

The brief and the answer

Hostel 2028 wanted a film for tourists and for the trade alike: unusual, fast, funny — and fitting in as many of the hostel’s own rooms as possible along with a few recognisable Kaliningrad landmarks. So we told a story. A couple arrives in the city: a yellow suitcase, a paper map and the hostel’s business card on the table, and on the phone an incoming video call from “Dad”, who will pester them for the rest of the trip. What follows is a tour of the alternatives. First “Tamara’s”: a peeling pre-war villa with a landlady in a yellow headscarf, a rotary telephone and a desk lamp. Then the “VIP Luxury House”, five stars on the desk and a receptionist whose stare sends you straight back out. Only the third option turns out to be the right one: brick walls, a shared kitchen, warm light, coffee, bunk beds and a staircase the pair are already running up as if they lived there. In between: the South railway station, Fish Village and the Cathedral, a car, a map and a great many crash zooms. It closes on the card “20|28 Hostel — more than a home”.

How it was shot

A full seven-minute making-of survives: the crew talk to camera about how the film was written and shot, with green-screen work, lighting and the set in every location — and individual devices captioned right there on the picture, for instance the “crash zoom effect”, the hard snap-ins that carry the film’s tempo.
