IKBFU — for Hong Kong
An urgent brief for a Hong Kong conference film — which became the plot
About the project
The brief and the answer
“You have a new message: URGENT! We need a film for a conference in Hong Kong! In two languages. Start right now.” What happened next is the film itself. Instead of hiding the impossible deadline we made it the opening: our hero, headphones on, gets that very brief in a messenger, opens the project — on screen it is literally called BFU_Hong Kong — types “Russia” into a search bar, and from there the shots of Kaliningrad fly out of his monitor and hang in the air around the desk. The presentation lives inside that device: the cathedral on Kant Island in autumn, the Fishing Village, the Dohna Tower, surfers in the Baltic and the dunes of the Curonian Spit; campuses from above, an archive photograph of the Albertina, laboratories and microscopes, lectures, students in lab coats, graduation and the “I ♥ IKBFU” letters. The university and the city are shown the way someone looking at Russia from the other end of the continent ought to see them. The film was made in two languages, Russian and English.
