IKBFU — through time
Three minutes for the road from a teachers’ institute to a federal university
About the project
The brief and the answer
In 2022 the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University turned 75. A respectable age: time to take up fishing and plant a vegetable patch — except this university is built differently, it keeps renewing itself and looking ahead. The secret is the people who shape its history, and in three minutes we set out to show the whole road of that transformation: from the Kaliningrad State Teachers’ Institute to today’s Baltic Federal University. The film is conceived as a reel of film: in the first shot hands take a tin can down from an archive shelf and thread the reel into a projector — and everything that follows turns out to be what the projector is showing. The archive newsreel runs inside a narrow black-and-white frame, and the moment the camera breaks out of it, today’s campus arrives in widescreen. There are no cuts between the eras: an FPV drone stitches them together, passing through doorways, stairwells and rooftops in a single dash. Along the way the film steps into a reconstruction of Kant’s study, where an actor in a wig writes by candlelight among globes and books, flies through a colonnade hung with portraits of rectors, rises above the clock of the main building, drops into laboratories, clean rooms and a high-tech workshop, and comes out at 3D visualisations of the future campus. The ending gathers everything into four words — heritage, equality, innovation, future — and one final line: “The future is here.” Then the reel runs out, and the same hands lift it off the projector.
