About the project

The brief and the answer

Art does not tolerate an assembly line. But can an assembly line be art? This film for the Kaliningrad marzipan factory Pomatti is built as one long movement — from raw material to shop window. Almonds, bowls and rollers, warm marzipan dough rolled out by hand and cut with moulds: hearts, stars, little figures. Then the curtain of chocolate the pieces travel under on the belt, the cooling tunnel, the wrapping line and the red Edel Marzipan foil. The ending happens outside the factory gates: a shop, a box in the shopkeeper’s hands and a customer walking away along a red-brick wall — the marzipan returns to the city it is made for. We shot close and tight so that the plant would read as a workshop: every machine here has the same job as the hands.
