About the project
The brief and the answer
Independent building inspection — when buying, renovating or building a home — is a little-known service that a great many people could use. To explain it to a Kaliningrad audience we made not a commercial but a series: “Muratov”, a story in a Soviet-noir-and-cheerful register in which the inspector, in a flat cap and trench coat, works like a private detective. In the first episode a young couple buys a flat from a brisk landlady, and Muratov finds with a magnifying glass what the buyers were not meant to see behind the wallpaper. In the second a crew is renovating: the foreman in a leather jacket with a phone and a bottle, workers in hard hats busy with anything but the job, cash passing from hand to hand — until Muratov walks in holding two bunches of severed wires and pulls back the plastic sheeting to reveal a disco where the building site should be. The pastiche is not only in the costumes: part of the film is shot in a narrow, almost square frame with film grain, the end cards are set like Soviet television idents, and instead of the usual agency logo the film closes on “Franema Video Atelier”. A month per episode.
