About the project

The brief and the answer

The “Zakryto, Vkhodite” culture house asked for advertising that would not look like advertising for a venue: no assembly montage to a house track, no clouds of smoke in slow motion, and none of the words such advertising is not allowed to use in Russia. So we made a two-minute trailer for an animated film that does not exist — a parody in which the hero is not a person but a piece of the furniture. The venue is empty before opening, glass vessels stand on the shelves, and one of them suddenly acquires a pair of drawn eyes and a mouth. From there it is pure trailer dramaturgy: “He is still young and naive”, “But it all went wrong”, “A long time ago”. Two-dimensional animation lives on top of the live-action footage: the vessels blink, exchange glances, flinch from the hands reaching for them out of the dark, and watch the guests who notice nothing. It is shot like a feature — long lenses, warm red and orange light, a trailer-voice narrator and an original score — and it ends on the venue’s logo and a full credit roll. A month of work in total.

Backstage

How it was shot

What survives is not just a backstage but a two-and-a-half-minute breakdown put together by Konstantin Dokuchaev and Arseny Zayanchkovsky. Everyone who made the film speaks in it: Ilya “MUKH” Mukhortykh, who came up with the idea and owns the venue; voice actor Dmitry Rybin in the booth with his headphones; and composer Daniil Gankov at the mixer. Between the interviews: the set in haze and red light, a storyboard drawn by hand in Autodesk Sketchbook, and a look at how the eyes and mouth are laid over the glass.
